Pilasters are thin rectangular columns, built flat against a wall. In classic architecture, an ornamental capital is often used at the top of the pilaster. Pilasters with ornamental capitals can achieve the same effect as columns, while conserving cost and space. They can also be used as sconces for indirect light fittings, door and window trim, and display features.
